I don’t think the people in Hawaii are less patriotic because they speak American English. Mahal ko ang Filipinas. But I love English at I studied Spanish at Centro Cervantes. Then as fate would have it, I married a Spaniard and live now in Spain. If I didn’t speak good English and had no idea of Spanish I wouldn’t be an EFL teacher here. I would be cleaning houses. And believe me, they envy us for knowing English. They struggle with it, pay extra money to speak it. And no they don’t study Spanish at university here. And no they haven’t sold their souls to any Johns and James or Steeeeve. Keep calm and carry on Pinoy. Kilala mo sarili mo.”

Pero ayun naman sa DEPED sinabi nilang, “DepEd said Filipino “remains to be among the core subjects in basic education while the teaching of Panitikan (Literature) in the Filipino subject serves as a springboard for discussion of grammar lessons and a way of strengthening the Filipino identity and culture.”
